Top Tips for Fantastic Photographs on Your Kimberley Holiday

Kimberley tours and cruises are an amazing way to see this beautiful region, but how do you do it justice with your holiday snaps? Capturing those candid shots while you’re on the move, particularly on a boat can be a challenge and can lead to blurred pictures and misframed shots. Fortunately, we have some tips to help you create those lifetime memories and show off your adventures to your friends back home.

Protect All Your Gear

This may appear obvious, but many people on a Kimberley holiday don’t take care with their cameras. If you’re on deck, you need a strap around your neck to secure your camera. You’ll also need to carry cleaning gear so you can protect the lens and metal components of your camera from salt water splashes. It’s a good idea to invest in a rugged camera bag and carry a few extra plastic bags just in case.

Avoid the Blur of Shakes and Motion

If you’re on a boat, there will be some vibration when the engines are running. Whether you’re using your camera on a tripod or have it set on a hard surface, you’re likely to get blur from the motion. This can be mitigated by increasing your shutter speed and using an Image Stabilisation or Vibration Reduction mode on your camera. If you want to freeze motion, try an ISO shutter speed of 300 or more.

There are many factors that can influence the ideal shutter speed including the weather and time of day, but generally, an increase will allow you to capture fast movement like a swimming croc or rippling water.

Make Use of Scale

If you want to capture the majesty of natural phenomenon, you should make use of scale. Adding a person, vehicle or boat to your frame will increase the impressiveness factor of any landscape. It can also make your photos unique to your particular experience.

Slow Down for Moving Water

If you want to capture spectacular moving water like a waterfall cascading from a gorge, you’ll need to slow down your shot. Adjust the shutter speed and experiment to accommodate the natural light and your position.

Shoot Extras

You may not always know you’ve captured a great or bad shot until after you’ve passed that swimming croc or cascading waterfall. So increase your chances of a fabulous photo by taking lots of extras. Try out different modes, apertures and shutter speeds to capture the best shot. Remember you can clear space on your memory card later by deleting any blurring or bad images.
